Singapore's FlagSingapore

Like many Asian countries, Singaporean society puts strong emphasis on social order and stability. Singaporean society spurns the liberal western concept of society in preference for a modern society with Asian values of sharing within society. The values of discipline and self control, honesty, a good education and personal humility are all regarded highly in Singaporean society. Singaporeans are also very hard workers which partly accounts for the economic strength of the country. The government also implements a policy of promoting programs that furthers the country's five shared values. These are:- nation before community and society above self; family as the basic unit of society; community support and respect for the individual; consensus, not conflict; and racial and religious harmony.

Although the society has three major ethnic groups, there are few inter-racial problems as the government stresses the need for harmony and interaction between the different groups. In addition, the traditional and cultural values are enshrined in law or government programs, eg. each ethnic group is encouraged to learn their native language. Programs are also implemented to remove economic disparities that could ultimately result in social disruption, eg. Singaporean Malays are given specific aid to help raise their economic standing to that of the Chinese and Indians.
