New Zealand
The New Zealand population is
predominantly European (80%) with about 10% Maori
and 4% Pacific Polynesian. The Europeans are
referred to as Pakeha and the Pakeha and Maori
cultures share many common aspects. For example,
they both respect and value friendship and family
and have strong community spirit. There is also a
strong egalitarian tradition and a feeling for
social equality within the community. The
lifestyle is relatively relaxed and informal. 85%
of the population lives in the urban areas.
Generally the people are seen
as quite self reliant, practical with a friendly
hospitality to others. Home ownership and
education are valued and the Pakeha community
enjoys working about their homes.
Compared to the rest of the
world New Zealand ranks very high in providing
the majority of its citizens with excellent
opportunities and access to the resources needed
for pursuing their personal goals. This applies
fairly equally for men and women. It is a wonderful country with
fantastic scenic beauty.
