The Netherland's FlagThe Netherlands

The people of the Netherlands commonly referred to as the Dutch, are descended from Germanic stock with some mixing form Gallo-Celtic stock. Of the 15 million plus population, 95% are ethnic Dutch with the remainder composed of Indonesians, (~50,000), Surinamese (~ 210,000) and approximately a quarter of a million guest workers, their families and descendants from Turkey and Morocco. Over 40% of the population resides in the western provinces of North (Noord) Holland and South (Zuid) Holland and overall 89% of the population live in urban areas.

The Dutch are justifiably proud of their heritage and achievements in reclaiming land from the sea. They have a saying that aptly reflects this pride: "God made the Earth, but the Dutch made Holland". The people are also proud of their arts, politics and technology, with the Government providing strong support for the arts, eg. city orchestras in Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague have international reputations. World renown Dutch artists include Rembrandt, Hals, Van Gogh and Mondriaan.
