Malaysian FlagMalaysia

The one important thing to remember about Malaysia is that it is a mixture of cultures that are coexisting in a stable manner. This does not mean there aren't disagreements between the cultures, but it is generally accepted that Malaysians have learnt to respect and live successfully with the diversity in its society. Malaysians are proud their country and the success they have succeeded in attaining. However, they still generally identify themselves first with respect to their ethnic background ahead of identifying themselves as Malaysian.

The three main cultures within the society are the Malays (59% of the population), the Chinese (32%) and the Indians (9%). You also have the Dayaks, Kadazans, Kenyahs, Meanaus and Muruts. The Chinese have traditionally had the economic power in Malaysia, but many years ago following a traumatic period of race riots, the government implemented programs to positively encourage the raising of living standards of the less privileged within Malaysian society. These programs have been viewed by the Chinese as discrimination against them. Nevertheless, it has generally been regarded as successful with Malays and other groups attaining greater economic power within the society.
