Japanese FlagJapan

Foreigners (particularly non-Asian) visiting Japan for the first time will find Japanese society rigid and strange. Conversely, the Japanese find the foreigner's (Gaigins) behaviour strange and often discourteous. Both sides are usually guilty of stereotypes and of not studying and understanding each others respective culture.

Japan has a rich and interesting culture where traditions are strong and age highly respected. Its has very generous people who will often go well out of their way to help foreigners. Japanese culture dictates loyalty to the needs of the group and these will over-ride the needs of, or the personal feelings of an individual. This ethos is followed throughout life from simply things like sporting clubs and big business, (especially in business). Unlike other countries where aggression is prevalent in business, in Japan, co-operation, loyalty, devotion are valued higher. To publicly show aggression is contrary to the etiquette and restraint expected within Japanese society.
