Germany
With
a population over 82 million, 86% of Germans live
in urban areas. Although ethnic Germans make up
the majority of the population there are
immigrant and ethnic minorities within the
country that can make up to 20% of the population
in some areas. These minorities include Turks,
Yugoslavs, Italian and Greeks immigrants. There
are also African, Indian, Middle Eastern and
Asian immigrant minorities in the Western states,
ethnic Slaves (known as Sorbs) in the East and
ethnic Danish minorities in the North. To these
immigrants, Germany is seen as a land of
opportunity and freedom. Although there has been
some isolated social unrest due to immigration,
the majority of Germans are strongly opposed to
the violence meted out on some immigrants.
Generally, Germans are seen
as very industrious, thrifty people who respect
law and order. They also respect punctuality and
skilled people but they can tend to be
pessimistic and wary of new ideas or thinking.
Socially, Germans are private people who enjoy
intelligent conversation with friends. At initial
introductions, Germans will generally appear
reserved. They feel uncomfortable to be relaxed
and casual with strangers and to be overtly
friendly until they establish a friendship.
